A Century-Old Gift Along the St. Marys River

Some parks feel new no matter how long they have been around. Foster Park feels the opposite. Spread across 255 acres along the St. Marys River at 3900 Old Mill Road, this south side favorite has been part of Fort Wayne life for more than a century, and it wears that age well. Mature trees shade the drives, flower beds line the walking paths, and the river keeps a slow, steady pace beside it all.

Visitors come here for all kinds of reasons. Golfers play the 18-hole, par 71 municipal course that has anchored the park for generations. Walkers and runners follow the tree-lined loop that runs roughly two miles through the park. Families claim the pavilions for reunions and birthday parties, gardeners wander the seasonal floral displays, and couples book the Bridal Glen for outdoor weddings under the trellises. There is even a dog park, community garden plots, and courts for tennis and pickleball.

For locals on the south side, Foster Park is less an attraction and more a habit. It is where you learned to ride a bike, where you walk after dinner, and where the fall color show happens every year without fail.

History of Foster Park

The story of Foster Park begins with two brothers. In 1912, Samuel Foster and Colonel David N. Foster donated a stretch of wooded land along the St. Marys River to the city of Fort Wayne. They did not stop there. The family later gave another 40 acres extending toward the Stellhorn Bridge, and in the early 1920s the Park Board purchased 111 more acres to round out the grounds.

The park grew up alongside the city. The municipal golf course became a fixture for generations of Fort Wayne golfers. During the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration built one of the park’s pavilions in 1938, and that structure still hosts gatherings today. Over the decades the city added gardens, trails, playgrounds, a cable footbridge over the river, and the log cabin replica that visitors still pass on their walks.

More than a hundred years after the Fosters’ gift, the park remains exactly what they intended. It is a free, green, welcoming space where the whole city can slow down.
