The Rich History and Legacy of the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo began with a vision to create a world where families could discover wildlife in a safe, engaging, and educational environment. Its journey is one of steady growth, innovation, and community support.

In 1952, land within Franke Park was designated for natural conservation and youth education. Inspired by this initiative, community leaders began planning a dedicated children’s zoo. After years of development, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo officially opened on July 3, 1965, featuring 18 exhibits and drawing more than 6,000 visitors on opening day.

Over the decades, major expansions transformed the zoo into an international-level animal park:

  • African Veldt (1976)
  • Australian Adventure (1987)
  • Indonesian Rain Forest (1994)

Each addition brought new species, innovative habitats, and expanded educational programs.
